Heavyweight streetwear is built to feel substantial, but that does not make it indestructible. Dense cotton, fleece, washed finishes and printed graphics can all be damaged by excessive heat, harsh chemicals or aggressive washing.
The safest rule is simple: follow the care label on the specific garment first. When the label allows machine washing, the steps below help reduce unnecessary wear.
1. Wash heavyweight clothing cold or cool
High heat can accelerate shrinkage, fading and stress on prints. Many RUE BÉNI pieces specify a gentle 30°C wash. Cold or cool water is usually the safer choice when the care label permits it.
2. Turn printed garments inside out
Turning a tee or hoodie inside out reduces direct abrasion against the printed surface during the wash cycle. It will not prevent all wear, but it helps protect large back graphics and smaller chest marks.
3. Use a gentle cycle
Heavy garments become even heavier when saturated. A gentler cycle reduces repeated pulling and twisting on seams, ribbing and printed areas.
4. Avoid bleach unless the care label explicitly allows it
Bleach can damage pigment, washed finishes and printed graphics. This matters especially on mineral-wash, sun-faded and vintage-wash garments where the surface color is part of the design.
5. Use low heat when tumble drying
Excessive dryer heat can shrink cotton and stress prints. If the garment allows tumble drying, low heat is safer. Air drying can reduce heat exposure further, although very heavy pieces take longer to dry completely.
How to wash a heavyweight hoodie
A dense hoodie such as the 500 GSM RB Paris Heavyweight Hoodie holds a lot of water. Do not overload the washing machine with several heavy garments at once. Give the piece room to move and dry fully before storing it.
How to wash heavyweight T-shirts
For 300–400 GSM tees, protect the neckline and print by washing inside out and avoiding excessive heat. Do not iron directly over graphics. The 400 GSM T-shirt guide explains why dense fabric behaves differently from a lightweight basic.
How to care for washed and distressed finishes
Mineral wash, sun fade and distressed details are intentionally irregular. Harsh washing can turn controlled aging into damage. Use gentle care and accept that washed garments will continue to evolve subtly over time.
For the finish differences, see Mineral Wash vs Sun Fade.
Should you use fabric softener?
Follow the garment instructions. Softener can leave residue on some fabrics and is not necessary for every heavyweight piece. When in doubt, use a mild detergent and skip extra additives.
Can you iron streetwear graphics?
Avoid placing a hot iron directly on printed areas. If ironing is allowed, use low heat and work from the reverse side or around the graphic.
