How to Measure Streetwear for the Right Oversized Fit

RUE BÉNI oversized boxy fit streetwear sizing guide

The easiest way to buy oversized streetwear online is not to guess from S, M or L. It is to compare the garment measurements with a piece you already own and like.

That matters because oversized, boxy and relaxed are design descriptions, not standardized measurements.

Start with a garment, not your body

Choose a T-shirt, hoodie or long sleeve that fits the way you want. Lay it flat on a level surface without stretching the fabric. Then compare its measurements with the product size guide.

How to measure chest width

Measure straight across the garment from underarm to underarm. Product charts may call this chest, half chest or width. Do not automatically double the number unless the chart specifically refers to circumference.

How to measure garment length

Measure from the highest shoulder point near the collar down to the bottom hem. On boxy clothing, length matters just as much as width: a wider body with controlled length creates a very different silhouette from a long oversized tee.

How to measure shoulder width

Measure from one shoulder seam to the other. On drop-shoulder clothing, that seam intentionally sits beyond the natural shoulder, so the measurement can be much wider than a conventional fitted garment.

How to measure sleeve length

Use the same method shown in the product size chart. Some brands measure from the shoulder seam; raglan sleeves can be measured from a different starting point. Consistency matters more than the absolute number.

Boxy fit vs oversized fit

A boxy garment emphasizes width relative to length. An oversized garment is intentionally larger overall. Read Boxy Fit vs Oversized Fit before sizing up automatically.

Should you size down in RUE BÉNI?

For pieces described as oversized or boxy, your normal size is intended to produce the designed silhouette. Size down only if you deliberately want a closer fit. The RUE BÉNI Size Guide lists the current fit approach by style.

Why GSM changes the way sizing feels

A 400 GSM tee and a lightweight tee can have similar flat measurements but look different on the body. Dense fabric tends to hold away from the body and create more visual structure. See the GSM clothing guide for the weight differences.

Online sizing checklist

  • Choose a garment you already like.
  • Lay it flat without stretching it.
  • Measure chest, length, shoulder and sleeve using the product chart method.
  • Compare actual garment measurements, not just the letter size.
  • Account for whether the new garment is boxy, oversized, regular or slim.
  • Remember that heavier fabric can look more structured at the same dimensions.

Applying the same approach to barrel-leg jeans

Compare the length, waist and hip measurements of a pair of trousers you already like with the chart on our Signature 300 GSM vintage-wash barrel-leg jeans. Check whether each chart uses flat measurements or circumference before comparing numbers. The loose barrel-leg silhouette is part of the cut, so choose by measurements rather than automatically sizing up.

Streetwear sizing FAQ

Should I buy one size up for oversized clothes?

Not when the product is already designed oversized. Your regular size should usually create the intended silhouette.

What if I am between sizes?

Compare garment measurements. Choose the larger size for more volume or the smaller size for a closer fit, while checking how length and shoulder width change.

Why does the same size fit differently between products?

Different patterns, fabrics and intended silhouettes can produce different measurements even when the label size is the same.
